Winter advice
Winter roof maintenance tips
Simple checks that help prevent ice damage and leaks through the cold, stormy months.
Clear gutters and downpipes
Blocked gutters hold water that freezes, overflows and pushes moisture under tiles. Clear leaves before the first frost.
Prevent ice dams
Uneven roof warmth melts snow that refreezes at the eaves. Good loft insulation and ventilation keep the roof surface evenly cold.
Check loft insulation
Aim for around 270mm of insulation and keep vents clear to stop condensation building up in the roof space.
Secure loose tiles and ridges
Winter storms lift loose or cracked tiles. Fixing them early is far cheaper than repairing water damage later.
Inspect flashing and seals
Lead flashing around chimneys and skylights is a common leak point. Look for gaps, lifting or cracked mortar.
Look for early warning signs
Damp patches on ceilings, dripping in the loft or tiles in the garden after a storm all need prompt attention.
Stay safe
