Emergency repair guide
What to do when winter damages your roof
Leaks, missing tiles and ice damage need fast action. Here's how to protect your home in the first hour, and when to call us.
Common winter roof problems
Roof leaks
Water stains, drips or damp patches on ceilings. Often caused by slipped tiles, cracked flashing or failed valleys.
Storm-damaged tiles
High winds lift and blow off tiles and ridge caps, leaving the felt and timbers exposed to rain.
Ice and snow build-up
Ice dams in gutters force meltwater back under tiles, and heavy snow strains older roofs.
Blocked gutters
Leaves and debris cause overflowing water that soaks walls, fascias and soffits.
Immediate steps to take
- 1
Stay safe
Never climb onto a wet, icy or storm-damaged roof. If water is near lights or sockets, switch off that circuit.
- 2
Contain the water
Put buckets and towels under drips. If a ceiling is bulging, carefully pierce it in the centre to release water in a controlled way.
- 3
Protect your belongings
Move furniture, electronics and valuables away from the leak and cover what you can't move.
- 4
Record the damage
Take photos inside and out from the ground. These help with your home insurance claim.
- 5
Call an emergency roofer
A professional can make the roof watertight with a temporary repair, then fix the cause properly.
