Homeowner's Roofing Guide

Straightforward advice from GS Roofing Solutions on spotting problems, choosing materials and looking after your roof.

How do I know if my roof needs repairing?

Look for slipped, cracked or missing tiles and slates, damp patches on upstairs ceilings, daylight in the loft, sagging rooflines and gutters that overflow during rain. Moss build-up and crumbling mortar on ridge tiles or chimneys are also early signs. Small faults are cheap to fix, but left alone they let water into the timbers and can turn into a much bigger job.

Repair or replace?

If the damage is limited to a few tiles, a flashing or one section, a repair is usually the best value. If the roof is over 40 years old, leaks in several places or the battens and felt underneath have failed, a full re-roof is often cheaper in the long run. A roof inspection gives you a written report so you can decide with the facts in front of you.

Which roofing material is best?

Natural slate lasts the longest and suits period homes. Clay and concrete tiles are durable and cost-effective for most houses in Surrey and Kent. For flat roofs on extensions, garages and dormers, GRP fibreglass is seamless, tough and fully waterproof. Lead is still the best choice for flashings, valleys and detailed work around chimneys and lanterns.

What to do after storm damage

Stay out of the loft if the ceiling is bowing, move valuables away from leaks and photograph the damage for your insurer. Then call a roofer for an emergency callout. We offer 24/7 cover to make the property watertight with a temporary repair, followed by a permanent fix.

How often should a roof be maintained?

We recommend a check every two to three years, and after any major storm. Gutters should be cleared at least once a year, ideally in late autumn, so leaves don't cause overflows and damp walls.
